مستخلص: The article discusses psychological findings relevant to economics. It has been assumed that each individual has stable and coherent preferences. Economics maximizes those preferences. The article discusses how psychological research teach about making utility function more realistic. It views that an individual's preferences are determined by changes in outcomes relative to reference level. It points at how people depart from pure self-interest to pursue "other-regarding" goals. It examines evidence that requires relatively small modifications of the familiar economic framework. It discusses self-control phenomena that arise because people have a short-run propensity to pursue gratification that is inconsistent with their long-run preferences. It emphasizes what psychology tells economists about modifying their general assumptions about individual behavior, rather than on any of its specific economic applications. Powerful combinations of methods have been employed in mainstream economics.
