مستخلص: This text is intended for use by advanced students of the Chinese language to learn to write at the college level in modern Chinese. The first ten lessons teach how to progress from the spoken structures to their contemporary written forms. Each lesson contains a text with a familiar form, notes on grammatical structures, and exercises. The text and exercises are largely in Chinese; notes are in English and Chinese. Text forms include a letter to a friend, an anecdote, a short travel essay, formal letters, an expository essay on Chinese mythology, a discussion of Chinese medicine, an essay in appreciation of a Chinese poem, and an essay on Chinese landscape painting. An index follows these lessons. Lessons 11 through 14 contain brief texts of contemporary Chinese writers, selected for variation in style, and exercises. A second index follows this section. Indexes include ideograph, Romanized form, and lesson and note references. (MSE)
