The article focuses on the issue of preterm birth in the United States. These types of births account for 12.5% of all births in the country and are more prevalent among African-Americans, Hispanic women, American Indians and Alaskans. Preterm infants are at high risk for many medical problems; including birth defects, mental retardation and cerebral palsy. Complications from these births cost $26.2 billion in 2005. The article notes that the types of factors which contribute to preterm births are social, biological, behavioral and genetic. There is a shortage of published work on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of preterm birth, which leaves room for more clinical research in the area. |
