There are many reasons to study the molecular and cellular biology of Listeria monocytogenes. However, it is primarily studied as a model organism for the interaction between intracellular bacterial pathogens and their host cells. Listeria monocytogenes infections in humans can be divided into two basic forms— perinatal listeriosis and listeriosis in the adult patient. Both forms are characterised by either a widespread infection of multiple organs or by a local infection of the central nervous system. |
