الوصف: Natural regeneration is a slow and unpredictable process because of the complex interaction between the success of seedling establishment and site factors. In this review, we focus on four groups of factors that influence natural regeneration: seeds (seed production, seed banks, seed viability, serotinous cones in conifers, seed dormancy and seed germination), seedling performance, sprouting and ecological factors of the site (soil characteristics, weed competition, temperature, salinity, water availability, light, wildfires, predation, pests and diseases). The knowledge of the effect of all these factors and their interactions on the physiology of seedlings is essential for the management of natural stands. In this sense, simulations of forest regeneration are a useful tool. ; La regeneración natural es un proceso lento y poco predecible debido a la compleja interacción existente entre el éxito en el establecimiento de los brinzales y diferentes factores del medio. La presente revisión se centra en cuatro grupos de factores que influyen sobre la regeneración natural: la semilla (producción de semilla, bancos, viabilidad, piñas serotinas en coníferas, dormición y germinación), el comportamiento de los brinzales, la capacidad de rebrote y los factores ambientales (características del suelo, daños por herbívoros, temperatura, salinidad, disponibilidad hídrica, luz, fuego, competencia herbácea, enfermedades). El conocimiento del efecto de estos factores y sus interacciones sobre la fisiología del regenerado resulta esencial para la gestión de las masas forestales. En este sentido, las simulaciones de la regeneración natural constituyen una herramienta muy útil.

الوصف: Results from an experiment with the objective of studying the sprouting capability —shoots of stump or root— on aged holm-oak trees are shown in this paper. Site of study is located in Riofrío forest, at 960 m a.s.l. at north facing slope of Guadarrama range (Central mountain range), on deep siliceous soils. After an ecological and dasonomic inventory 24 aged trees were fellen; dbh of fellen trees vary from 22.3 to 73.2 cm and age was estimated to be between 70 and 251 years. Contingence tables and logistic regression were used to test the dependence relationship among trees characteristics and the intensity of subsequent sprouting. One period growth after felling, 13 trees (62%) among the live ones (21) that had been felled present some shoots; after three growth periods, the same portion raised to 81% (17). We found only shoots of stump in 65% of the trees that had sprouted; 12% of trees that have only shoots of root and 23% of the trees with both types of shoots. Neither shoot production nor shoot type —stump or root— seems to be influenced by age. ; Se presentan en este trabajo los resultados y conclusiones de una experiencia cuyo objetivo es comprobar la capacidad de brote de cepa y de raíz de ejemplares de encina de edades avanzadas. Está localizada en el monte Riofrío, a una altitud de 960 m en la vertiente norte de la Sierra de Guadarrama, sobre suelos silíceos profundos. Tras estudio ecológico y dasométrico de la zona, se apean 24 ejemplares. El rango diamétrico de los pies apeados va de 22,3 a 73,2 cm y sus edades estimadas varían entre 70 y 251 años. Se analiza mediante tablas de contingencia y regresión logística la relación de dependencia entre el hecho de que los pies hayan brotado tras la corta y sus características. Un periodo vegetativo después del apeo, sobre un total de 21 pies vivos rebrotan 13, lo que supone el 62%. Cuando han transcurrido tres periodos vegetativos, el número de pies rebrotados es de 17 (81%). De los 17 pies brotados, el 65% lo ha hecho sólo de cepa, el 12% sólo de raíz, y ...
