El trabajo aspira, desde un estudio de caso, a analizar los cambios y continuidades en las festividades de la Virgen de Loreto en Santiago del Estero, desde principios del siglo xx hasta fines de la década de 1930. La inundación que arrasó la antigua Villa de Loreto, en 1908, representa un punto de inflexión, por cuanto al tener los pobladores que refugiarse en la estación del ferrocarril, o en otras poblaciones cercanas, la devoción mariana y sus celebraciones tuvieron que trasladarse también. La adaptación al nuevo medio, la migración de los antiguos pobladores y la llegada de otros, especialmente inmigrantes de origen sirio-libanés, más la injerencia de los obispos de la nueva diócesis santiagueña, recientemente creada en 1907, produjeron un cambio significativo en las festividades, las cuales, sin embargo, mantuvieron ciertas continuidades, difíciles de desarraigar. Hasta la inundación, eran las élites provinciales las que ocupaban un lugar preeminente en la organización de las fiestas.
