الوصف: To establish the prevalence of body mass index (BMI), obesity, insulin resistance (IR) and metabolic syndrome (MS) a Cross Sectional Study was performed, in a proportional stratified sample of 253 students, admitted to the first semester at different faculties of Universidad Tecnológica Equinoccial, during the 2011 school year. This research program was carried out in order to design a baseline that will allow tracking changes in the parameters described, every two years. 23% of students had a BMI considered above normal (95% CI: 17.9 to 28.6%), presenting higher prevalence of obesity in males: 16%, than in females: 6% (p <0.05). The insulin resistance was studied through the Homeostasis Model Assessment (HOMA); the values varied among the students from 0.19 to 14.24. According to the established parameters for insulin resistance, measured by HOMA, it was found that the prevalence of insulin resistance in students was 25.7% (95% CI 20.4% to 31.5%). The prevalence of MS was 12.6 % (95% CI 8.8% to 17.3), being the prevalence in males of 14.8% (95% CI 98.3% to 21.9%), and of 10.2% in women (95% CI 5.3 % to 17.1%) p <0.05. Additionally, it is important to note the high prevalence of smoking and alcohol intake in men and women, and a frequent diet with carbohydrates content. To obtain the prevalence described above, it was necessary to take body measurements and do laboratory tests to build percentile parameters, which will be useful as reference in new measurements. Eating habits, alcohol consumption, smoking, etc. were also studied as well as personal and family history of the students.
