الوصف: Objective: Patient acceptance of pharmaceutical treatment is influenced by how the benefits of therapy are communicated by their physician. Several studies from urban centres have shown that patients are more likely to accept a therapy if benefit is expressed as relative risk reduction (RRR) rather than absolute risk reduction (ARR) or number needed to treat (NNT). In my research I examine whether these results are reproducible in urban and rural British Columbian communities. In addition, I assess whether patients wish to receive information in this format or whether their preference is simply to follow their doctor's advice, and I consider other factors that may influence patients' decision-making such as age or past medical history. Design: anonymous patient survey. Setting: 5 family practice offices in Kelowna, 100 Mile House and Queen Charlotte City. Main outcome measure: patient willingness to take lipid-lowering or antihypertensive drugs when three different formats of the same data are presented. Results are pending.
