الوصف: The aim of this investigation was to analyze the intensity of lipid peroxidation and the activity of antioxidant enzymes and the chromosomal damage induced by radiotherapy in breast cancer patients in order to investigate the existence of a possible correlation between these parameters. The activities of catalase (CAT) and superoxiddismutase (SOD) in blood serum and the yield of chromosome aberrations in peripheral lymphocytes were studied in breast cancer patients before (n=15) and after (n=14) radiotherapy. Besides, the intensity of lipid peroxidation as measured by the concentration of diene conjugates (DK) and malonic dialdehyde (MDA) in blood serum was evaluated. Significantly higher MDA concentration, CAT activity and chromosome aberration frequency was found in cancer patients as compared to healthy women. The treatment of patients with ionizing radiation increased significantly the frequency of induced chromosome aberrations (P<0,0001), but did not cause pronounced changes of the prooxidant-antioxidant status (P>0,05). There was no clear correlation between the cytogenetic findings and antioxidant status parameters. However, the tendency of negative correlation between SOD levels and chromosome damage was determined (r= -0,5216, P=0,0998).
