الوصف: The paper contains a short description and assessment of different hazardous waste treatment methods. Thermal treatment, especially plasma technological processes, are indicated as most effective. A technology related to a high temperature thermal destruction and a waste processing system based on plasma torch technology have been selected for further realization. In compliance with the international specifications of hazardous waste treatment the technological equipment for plasma treatment has been designed and manufactured. Two kinds of plasma sources have been developed and employed. The first one is an atmospheric pressure DC air plasma torch, power 50 kW, air flow rate (3.5–10) × 10-3 kg × s-1. The outflow temperature varies up to 3500 K. The second source is a DC plasma torch operating on water vapour, power 6–20 kW, the plasma forming vapour flow rate being (0.6–1.7) × 10-3 kg × s-1. A plasma chemical reactor (length 1.5 m, internal diameter 0.2 m) was connected to a linear sectional plasma torch. The distribution of plasma source and reactor operating parameters have been established. The system was applied for the treatment of waste containing organic substances such as acetic acid and naphthalene. Results on heat balance and heat transfer have shown that the combustion process takes place over the whole reactor volume. The good characteristics of plasma equipment offer unique solutions to meet the increasing demands of pyrolysis, vitrification and thermal destruction of hazardous organic wastes.
