الوصف: The purpose of this study is to provide an indigenous perspective on the socio-cultural identity of contemporary lakota and to examine the construction of that identity by using several analytical dichotomies (or “contrast sets”): urban – reservation, pan-Indian – tribal, Native American – Euro-American, traditionalist – Christian, bilingual – monolingual and full-blood – mixed-blood. These dichotomies emerge not as oppositions, but, rather as dimensions of possible identity choices. I argue that identity is not a fixed and essential social, ethnic and political category, but is, fluid, multiple, and situational. I believe, that the Lakota identity researched in this study is bicultural, allowing them to find references in both Native American and dominant Euro-American cultures. For my research I have chosen lakota currently living in Spearfish or nearby Rapid City. My informants are mostly students and educators originally coming from surrounding reservations of Pine Ridge, Standing Rock, Lower Brule, Rosebud and Cheyenne River, and enrolled into respective tribes. A major theme running through the paper is that Lakota can belong to as many cultural, social and political worlds as they like, as long as they know who they are and can trace their roots and belongings, since identity, or should I say identities, allow for multiplicity and depend on the context, as well as on the background of upbringing.
