الوصف: In this article the seismic site response of the Norcia basin, Central Italy, has been analyzed using both 1D and 2D ground response numerical models. Period-dependent aggravation factors (PDAFs) quantifying the difference between 2D and 1D site response are provided for two representative cross-sections of the basin. Time-domain linear visco-elastic and non-linear analyses were carried out by the finite difference commercial program FLAC2D. For the former, the PDAFs were computed using a suite of representative ground motion records. Although the basin sediments are constituted by rather stiff soils, the Norcia basin is found to produce a consistent modification and enhancement of ground motion. It is found that the most important source of ground motion aggravation was the generation of Rayleigh waves at the basin edges. The variability of the PDAFs was explored by considering the effects of frequency content of input motion, damping ratio, irregularity of the alluvial-bedrock interface. The effect of the non-linear response of the sediments on the PDAFs was also addressed with reference to the Mw 5 October 30, 2016 event.

الوصف: We extended the analysis of a variational theory for nematoacoustics recently proposed by Virga [Phys. Rev. E 80, 031705 (2009)] by allowing the nematic director to vibrate about an average orientation at the frequency of a propagating wave, a periodic motion that we call the director libration. The acoustic susceptibilities, two phenomenological parameters that, in this theory, express the coupling between director and acoustic fields, are estimated along with an extra viscosity coefficient by using available experimental data.

الوصف: The effect of an ultrasonic wave on the nematic texture has long been known, but its interpretation in terms of a coherent dynamical theory has not yet been achieved. A proposal for such a theory is made in this paper. The diverse theoretical approaches attempted in the past to describe the interaction between sound and nematic molecular orientation are briefly summarized. A theory for second-grade fluids, which provides the appropriate theoretical background for nematoacoustics, is also revived. An explicit application of the proposed theory to a simple computable case is given, which yields predictions that are qualitatively confirmed by a number of experimental results.

الوصف: We study the discretization behavior of classical finite element and NURBS approximations on problems of structural vibrations and wave propagation. We find that, on the basis of equal numbers of degrees-of- freedom and bandwidth, NURBS have superior approximation properties. In fact, we observe that the high mode behavior of classical finite elements is divergent with the order of approximation, a surprisingly negative result. On the other hand, NURBS offer almost spectral approximation properties, and all modes converge with increasing order of approximation.

الوصف: The authors of this paper present the results of a study concerned with the assessment of the vibrational impact induced by the passage of commuter trains running in a tunnel placed underground the city of Rome. Since the railway line is not yet operational, it was not possible to make a direct measurement of the ground vibrations induced by the railway traffic and the only way to make predictions was by means of numerical simulations. The numerical model developed for the analyses was calibrated using the results of a vibration measurement campaign purposely performed at the site using as a vibration source a sinusoidal vibration exciter operating in a frequency-controlled mode. The problem of modeling the vibrational impact induced by the passage of a train moving in a tunnel is rather complex because it requires the solution of a boundary value problem of three-dimensional elastodynamics in a generally heterogeneous, nonsimply connected continuum with a moving source. The subject is further complicated by the difficulties of modeling the source mechanism, which constitutes itself a challenge even in the case of railway lines running at the surface. At last, the assessment of the vibrational impact at a receiver placed inside a building (e.g., a human individual or a sensitive instrument) requires an evaluation of the role played by the structure in modifying the computed free-field ground motion. So far, few attempts have been made to model the whole vibration chain (from the source to the receiver) of railway-induced ground vibrations, with results that have been only moderately successful. The numerical simulations performed in this study were made by using a simplified numerical model aimed to capture the essence of the physical phenomena involved in the above vibration chain including the influence of the structural response as well as the dependence of the predicted vibration spectra on the train speed.
