الوصف: The successes I have achieved throughout my educational journey would certainly not have been possible without the unending support of my mentor, my family, and my friends. I especially want to thank my adoring wife Jennifer for putting up with all late nights and long weekends I spent at the lab. Without her love and support all the accomplishments in the world would mean nothing. I would also like to thank Dr. Ekkad for his guidance, wisdom, and most importantly his friendship. It seems like yesterday I was simply trying to get a flag raised so I could schedule classes, when unbeknownst to me, I was caught up in the world wind that is Dr. Ekkad. His influence was undoubtedly the driving force behind all of the educational and professional achievements I have had since that seemingly random morning three years ago. I could not imagine a better mentor. I also must thank of my lab mates, both past and present. Special thanks go out to Hasan Nasir and Eric Esposito for their assistance in a multitude of tasks I could not have performed without their help. My thanks also go out to my classmates Jonathon Lagrone and Ross Gustafson. Having such great guys to collaborate with made my graduate studies infinitely more enjoyable. Last and certainly not least I have to thank my family. The unconditional support and encouragement I received from my parents was a crucial part of my educational journey. Any time I began to falter, they were there

الوصف: This paper reviews two questions concerning the use of the Kolbe system as a basis for utilizing conative information to improve learning, problem solving and group effectiveness. The first deals with the effectiveness of conation in predicting how individuals and groups will direct their energies in accomplishing specific roles and assignments. The second focuses on the effectiveness and accuracy of the Kolbe system in identifying conative patterns. The first section concludes that there is strong support in psychological and educational theories and research for conation as a predictor of human behavior that can be used to improve the effectiveness of team and individual performance. The second section concludes that recent research, including Kolbe qEEG brain studies, support the accuracy of the Kolbe instruments in identifying conative patterns. I. Section 1 a. The Relationship of Conation to Productivity and Goal Attainment Conation, defined by Atman (1987) as "vectored energy: i.e., personal energy that has both direction and magnitude" (p. 15), involves intrinsic motivation, volition, agency, self-direction, and self-regulation (Kane, 1985; Mischel, 1996). Historically, it has been considered the complement to human cognition--"knowing how" and emotion or affect--"feeling about," in explaining the motivations for human behavior. Campbell (1999) has described the independence of conation from learned behaviors, suggesting that the human power to "get things done" is often in conflict with environmental or behavioral influences. Bagozzi (1992) has argued that conation has particular significance in human learning and that, without considering conation, it was not possible to accurately predict how learning and associated behavior will occur. In a recent study focusing on the effects of cognitive, affective and conative domains in learning, TaitMcCutcheon defines conation as: The act of striving, of focusing attention and energy, and purposeful actions. Conation is about staying power, and survival. ...

الوصف: This dissertation is dedicated to my mother, Sheri Chancey, who always told me “You can do whatever you want to do, as long as you put your mind to it. ” Acknowledgements My parents, Tom and Sheri Chancey, deserve my unconditional gratitude for their love and constant encouragement. Their support has facilitated my completion of now three academic degrees; but most importantly, they have taught me to expect only the best from myself. I am exceedingly fortunate for such wonderful friends and role models. Thank you, Mom and Dad. I am forever grateful to my advisors, Dr. David Fowler and Dr. Maria Juenger. I am inspired by Dr. Fowler’s breadth of knowledge and his dedication to students, to his university, and to the field of engineering. His academic, professional, and personal mentorship have profoundly influenced me, and the experience I gained assisting Dr. Fowler in his consulting practice proved invaluable as I evaluated and pursued a career path. I also appreciate Dr. Fowler’s generosity with his extra athletic tickets. I will always first be a Gator, but he has made a true Longhorn of me. Dr. Fowler is a fantastic supervisor and has become a wonderful friend.

الوصف: ii In light of increasing system demands, system regulations, and constrained resources, those living and working with dementia in the long-term care sector are vulnerable to oppressive care practices. This is true so long as our understanding of how social power affects the ways in which dementia care knowledge is created, shared, and enacted remains limited. Based on prolonged field observations and on informal and formal interviews with care recipients, family members, and staff, the aim of this critical qualitative research was to examine the culture of dementia care knowledge in two sites: a specialized dementia care unit in a long-term care home, and an affiliated adult day program. Three key insights arise from this study. The first is that normalizing inclusiveness in generating dementia knowledge is akin to democratizing hierarchical relationships in long-term dementia care work environments; the more that knowledge is co-constructed under ethical conditions of discourse, the more point-of-care staff can

الوصف: Rounding, Lee, Jacobsen and Ji (2012) reported that priming with religious concepts increases the ability to delay gratification, an interpretation that implies decreased temporal discounting. The required magnitude of such a decrease—to make participants respond in the way Rounding et al. report—is very large, and should be easily detectable. Sixty-nine participants were allocated to religious, secular moral (Fairness) or neutral priming conditions. Temporal discounting rates were estimated for each participant using an ‘Equivalent Present Value’ procedure prior to and following the sentence unscrambling primes. No effects for priming conditions were detected. With regard to theoretical explanations for the results, we suggest that it is not the ability—but motivation—to delay gratification that is influenced by religious concepts.

الوصف: Along semiarid riparian corridors, quantifying seasonal and cyclic variations in surface water-groundwater interactions has significant implications for developing and calibrating hydrologic models. However, a comparison of stream-aquifer interactions as a function of different streamflow conditions has not been fully addressed. This gap in evaluating hydrological processes may affect resource-management activities if hydrologic models are conceptually flawed. This thesis investigates the degree of coupling between changes in river stage and resultant groundwater levels along a losing reach of the Río Grande in central New Mexico, United States. The stream-aquifer system near Escondida, New Mexico, was instrumented with temperature- and pressurerecording sensors to compare groundwater-level responses as a function of different streamflow conditions and determine forcing mechanisms driving diurnal stream-aquifer exchanges. Four streamflow scenarios were examined: small- and large-magnitude flood events and high and low river-stage conditions. Observations indicate that groundwater responses were tightly coupled to changes in river stage during flood-induced streamflow events and high river-stage conditions.
