Cet article examine les corrélations établies au cours du 18e siècle entre les variations de l’air et du climat et le développement d’affects ou de croyances. Il montre en particulier comment la survivance de la tradition diététique antique a permis de prêter attention à des formes de pathologies environnementales repérables non seulement au niveau des corps mais aussi des esprits : mélancolie, folie ou hystérie se trouvent ainsi mises en relation avec les variations climatiques et les événements météorologiques hors du commun. S’écartant d’une analyse strictement physiologique ou chimique de la composition de l’air, des médecins comme George Cheyne ou John Arbuthnot ont cherché à prendre en considération les interactions plus complexes qui se tissent entre l’air, les maladies, les affects, les croyances mais aussi les institutions politiques, religieuses et les productions culturelles des peuples. ; This article examines the correlations established during the eighteenth century between variations of the air and of the climate and the development of affects and beliefs. Thanks to the survival of Ancient dietary traditions, it shows how it has been possible to pay attention to forms of environmental pathologies, identifiable not only at the level of bodies but also in the mind : melancholy, madness or hysteria are thus related to climate variations and extraordinary meteorological events. Moving away from a stricly psychological or chemical analysis of air, (medical) doctors like George Cheyne or John Arbuthnot strove to take into consideration the more intricate connections woven between air, illnesses, affects, beliefs but also political, religious institutons, as well as the cultural productions of peoples. |
