الوصف: We investigated the determinants of awareness, utilization, and satisfaction regarding financial aid programs for single-person households in South Korea and proposed policy enhancements. Our analysis employed logistic regression on microdata from the “2020 Housing Survey” by Statistics Korea, covering the nation and all age groups. We categorized single-person household traits affecting program awareness, utilization, and satisfaction into demographic, socio-economic, housing, and housing perception factors. The dependent variables included awareness, utilization status, and satisfaction levels of government-sponsored financial support programs, which were measured on a four-point Likert scale. The independent variables encompassed demographic, socio-economic, and housing characteristics, which were analyzed comprehensively. We identified factors that influenced awareness, utilization, and satisfaction and recommended tailored policy measures. The findings revealed lower awareness among elderly individuals, women, rural residents, and rental households. Moreover, older age, lower income, rental, and one-room dwelling households exhibited lower utilization rates, with decreased housing and residential environment satisfaction correlating with diminished program satisfaction. Due to the diverse characteristics of single-person households, strategic interventions are crucial. Measures to bridge information gaps, establish comprehensive long-term support systems, and develop differentiated policies tailored to single-person household traits are imperative for improving financial aid programs for this demographic.

الوصف: Seeing the potential of goshiwons, Korea’s low-cost single occupancy accommodation, to be a livable and affordable micro-house, this study aims to offer suggestions for future improvements based on the emerging theory of micro-housing. A quantitative approach with structural equation modeling (SEM) was first conducted to test six proposed hypotheses. The first three hypotheses are that there are positive correlations between the current livability of goshiwons and (i) location, (ii) quality of the building and shared facilities, and (iii) room condition. The next three hypotheses emphasize that improving these three physical aspects will improve the degree of livability. An interview qualitative approach to relevant respondents was also applied in which the result further explains the quantitative result. Room conditions that include limited access to natural light, poor air circulation, lack of storage, and poor soundproofing are the main issues for the poor living environment of goshiwon. For future improvements, the location of goshiwon should also be considered as an addition to room condition. This is because, while the location of goshiwons is beneficial in terms of proximity to various facilities, the respondents wished for goshiwons to be located in a quieter and safer environment, away from late-night entertainment establishments.

الوصف: Minimum housing standards aim to safeguard housing rights and enhance residential conditions. Governments develop housing policies, including provision, preservation, and support for welfare programs, guided by the status of households below these standards. Growing nations commonly utilize this approach to decrease the proportion of households not meeting these criteria. In South Korea, the ratio of households below these standards was 4.5% in 2021, down from 16.6% in 2006, as indicated by the initial Korea Housing Survey. However, this downward trend has stalled over the past decade. With the 2004 and 2011 revisions, the standards have been effective for 12 years, yet no longer mirror current housing realities due to ongoing improvements. This study aimed to propose enhancements to Korea’s minimum housing standards. Through analyzing laws, prior research, present household statuses, international cases, and expert insights, recommendations emerged. Categorizing households by size, we developed precise standards covering area, facility, and location aspects. These new standards led to an 8.4% non-compliance rate in 2021. This research’s findings anticipate aiding the revision of minimum housing standards, formulating pragmatic policies for enhancing residential conditions in line with present situations.

الوصف: Through quantitative and qualitative analysis, this report conducts a thorough evaluation of the literature on the present progress in research on and the performance of net-zero-carbon cities (NZCCs). The quantitative analysis identifies ten major areas at this stage, and this analysis is followed by a systematic review of the dynamics and cutting-edge issues of research in the hot literature in this area. The systematic review reveals that the key points of NZCC transformation at this stage are research on zero-carbon buildings, urban paradigms, policies, economics, and renewable energy. Finally, based on the results of the previous analysis, to build the theoretical framework of NZCCs and combined with the sustainable development goals, future research directions are proposed, such as urban infrastructure transformation and low-carbon transportation, policy support and system reform, and digital transformation as well as coupling and balancing the relationships of various elements. In addition, cities need to develop evaluation indicators based on specific developments, and policy adaptability and flexibility are crucial for promoting cities’ efforts to achieve zero emissions. The current study provides targeted theoretical references and assistance for future policymakers and researchers, as well as advances and trends in the field of net zero carbon and associated research material from an urban viewpoint.

الوصف: This paper proposes that balancing public and private satisfaction in the creation of privately owned public space (POPS) might be the key to producing more efficient and effective POPSs. Seven qualitative techniques categorized into on-site observations, space syntax, survey, and regulatory review were used to gather data, and triangulation methods were used to derive conclusions. We then discussed methods for improving POPS planning and designs that prioritize both public and private sectors by assessing the indirect and direct benefits of POPS. Indirect benefits are delivered when POPS can elevate the pleasantness of the surrounding environment. In this study, users and tenants of the host buildings were found to obtain the most benefits with their easy access to POPS, while the public saw the existence of POPS as insignificant compared to local parks. Furthermore, the lack of good designs resulted in low public interest and awareness. Although developers gain direct benefits from bonus FAR, a less rigid but more comprehensive system is needed to increase developer motivation to create better POPS. Proposals that combine two or more POPS and regulations that require connection to existing public open space networks should be considered in future.

الوصف: As a critical tool to foster sustainable urban environments and boost quality of life for its participants, community gardening has been used in diverse fields including urban planning, design, and regeneration projects. Despite multiple researches on the issue, however, few have paid attention to its urban economic aspect which affects residents’ consistent participation. In this regards, the article analyzed key economic elements crucial for a longer-term commitment by conducting a survey on 117 participants residing in apartment complexes in South Korea’s capital city of Seoul. The results showed that the participants not only used lands within/near their houses but spaces located far from their residences. Also, a higher level of their Engel’s coefficient and the increase in the size of their cultivating lands turned out to boost the prolonged participation in their community gardening activity. Older participants and those who live with fewer family members were also found to be more proactive in community gardening.

الوصف: Recently, Korea has become increasingly interested in unused, but possibly useful energy resources, due to the world-wide controversy over nuclear power and limitations in renewable energy production. Among these unused resources, the water that is produced in our surroundings is available as a potential energy source for heating, cooling and domestic hot water. This water is relatively stable on the supply side, available as a high-efficiency source in all seasons, and is continuously replenished without polluting the environment. This paper analyses the energy savings generated based on the actual use of a sustainable heating and cooling system that operates using the water escaping from a nearby building. The results indicate the value of protecting the environment as well as reducing energy consumption and associated costs.

مستخلص: Application of the agreement rate is widespread in housing-renewal schemes in South Korea. If a certain proportion of owners in a district consent, they can form a renewal association and acquire the property rights of those owners who do not consent. This major policy tool has been used to control the speed at which projects accelerate through the stages of housing renewal. This study analyzes the effects of area and economic variables on project duration to examine how the agreement rate influenced the implementation of housing-renewal projects in Seoul from 2000-2013. The findings show that a low agreement rate may not translate into project acceleration, and a high agreement rate may not translate into project delay. The expectation from the policies is that the lower the agreement rate, the more projects will be promoted, but these findings indicate that that is not the actual effect. From a policy consistency standpoint, changing the agreement rate frequently is unreasonable. Thus, the policy of using the agreement rate as a means of improving project implementation should be reconsidered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

مستخلص: environmental protection issues and the monitoring of pollution, especially for the largest cities in Asia, are becoming increasingly prominent factors for inclusive urban planning of public open spaces. Recently, a walkability concept was implemented in many cities, and in 2016 it became a campaign direction for development in Seoul. This paper considers conditions of implementation for the walkability concept, using examples of pedestrian walkway-making initiatives, and regeneration of existing walkways along water streams in urban case studies in Seoul, South Korea. The role of nature-based solutions was considered in relation to aesthetics, and social and environmental characteristics (e.g., air pollution, oxygenation through greenery) obtained through literature reviews for the case studies. Considering the complexity of the situation, with factors such as Air Quality Index (AQI) warning conditions, and the general positive impact of walkability on enhancing a healthy life style and social interaction and on reducing congestion, this study contributes to the discussion on walkability, and the importance of nature-based urban regeneration projects for densely populated areas in cities. The results of particular cases in this paper suggest the need for careful monitoring and consideration of various factors for urban regeneration walkable design projects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

مصطلحات موضوعية: COFFEE shops, URBAN planning, PUBLIC spaces

مستخلص: Flexibility and hybridization of various commercial and public functions can be seen in today's urban landscapes, especially in the densely-populated global cities of Asia. This article, using the example of Seoul, South Korea, analyzes public cafes and coffee shops from the perspective of urban design typology. The compact space of a coffee shop, coupled with its location, proximity to urban dominant functions, users' preferences, and the industry's highly competitive nature, creates a unique environment and offers the opportunity for innovative design solutions. This article provides examples of building types ranging from one-story spaces to five-story specialized coffee house structures. Further, it examines the coffee shop's usability features in relation to its various locations, namely near the campus of Korea University, in the commercial and entertainment area of Myeong-dong, and in the office and business district of Yeouido. It notes the adaptation of space to the area's dominant use. Lastly, this article highlights seven types of program variations and their integration with other programs. These coffee shop variations and combination with other activities show the uniqueness and ingenuity of their creators as a response to a competitive environment, but also indicate a growing hybridization of urban functions in Seoul, one of Asia's global cities.
