This article reports on the work of physicists Stephen Jesse and Sergei Kalinin of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, who have devised a way to excite a cantilever and measure the response over a band of frequencies spontaneously. This could make scanning probe microscopy much more informative. Known as band excitation (BE), their method is useful for energy dissipation measurements. |
