Behold Genesis 75, the flagship of Waterway Houseboats' fleet on B.C.'s Shuswap Lake, a six-hour drive from either Vancouver or Calgary. Waterway--one of the oldest of nine houseboat companies clustered near the lakeside community of Sicamous--once dealt in a modest product; think camping on pontoons. Now Sicamous, the self-proclaimed "Houseboat Capital of Canada," is home to more than 250 houseboats of ever-increasing size and luxury. "Every year I still stand back in amazement," says Waterway's owner John Vinje. "They want them bigger." A 40-ft. vessel, which sleeps 10, rents for $1,126 for a four-day spring cruise. The 75-ft. Genesis sleeps 20, and rents for $8,995 a week in the summer high season. It's equipped with eight staterooms, four bathrooms, a full kitchen and such standard on-board toys as a waterslide, hot tub, fish sonar, TVs and a fireplace. The Shuswap, with four distinct arms and 1,000 km of shoreline, has an amazing capacity to absorb traffic from kayaks to lake yachts. Some boaters make a beeline for popular party beaches, while other seek out remote coves. The lake has 25 marine parks, golfing, superb hiking and a comforting array of marinas, pubs and deliver-to-the-dock grocery stores. |
